Video Special · Early Sonic 2 Prototypes (SMD/GEN NTSC)

As some kind of response to our Sonic the Hedgehog video on the Sega Master System [1], RetroGawat sent us a video showing early prototypes of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, a platform game done by Sega Corporation in 1992. Even though it’s not a PC game at all, it’s a nice peek at how development of video games was done in the early 90’s. Thanks for the contribution.

This video showcases the Nick Arcade prototype and the Simon Wai prototype.

The Nick Arcade prototype has been discovered by drx in 2006 and appears to be nearly identical to the version that has been shown in two 1992 episodes of Nick Arcade. It is in an earlier state than the Simon Wai prototype and clearly shows that development of Sonic 2 has been derived from its prequel, Sonic the Hedgehog.

The Simon Wai prototype (starting at 10:08) was found by Simon Wai on a Chinese website in 1999. It features several incomplete zones, including the famous Hidden Palace Zone. It has been said that the cartridge of this version was stolen from a toy show in New York in 1992.
